Slack alerts with an incoming webhook
Send FastPing alerts to a Slack channel using a Slack app with an incoming webhook, step by step.
- Go to Slack's app management page for developers (
api.slack.com/apps) and create a new app from scratch in your workspace. Name it "FastPing", for example. - In the app's settings, open Incoming Webhooks and switch them on.
- Click Add New Webhook, choose the channel that should receive alerts and allow access.
- Copy the webhook URL. It starts with
https://hooks.slack.com/services/.
Depending on your workspace settings, an administrator may need to approve the app.
In the dashboard, open Alert channels, choose the type Slack, paste the URL, click Add channel and then Send test. Attach the channel to your monitors.
Each alert is a message with the headline, then a block with a coloured bar (red, green, amber or blue for the state) that holds the check's message, an Open in FastPing link to the monitor, the target and where the check ran from:
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
That destination does not look valid for this channel type. | The URL does not start with https://hooks.slack.com/services/. | Use the incoming webhook URL, not a workflow or app URL. |
Test failed: HTTP 404 | The webhook was removed or the app uninstalled. | Create a new webhook and replace the channel. |
Test failed: HTTP 403 | Slack refused the post, for example because the channel was archived. | Choose another channel and create a new webhook. |
