TCP port monitors
Check that a service accepts TCP connections on its port (SSH, databases, mail, RDP or game ports) and learn what open, closed and filtered mean.

FastPing opens a TCP connection to the host and port, waits up to 8 seconds for the handshake to complete, then closes the connection immediately without sending any data. The response time is the time the handshake took.
| Result | Status | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Port 443: Open | Up | Something accepted the connection. |
Port 5432: Closed (connection refused) | Down | The host answered, but nothing listens on that port, or a firewall actively rejects the connection. |
Port 22: Timed out (filtered) | Down | No answer within 8 seconds: a firewall silently drops the packets, the host is off, or the route is broken. |
An open port proves that a process accepts connections, not that it answers correctly. A database can accept connections while refusing every query. Where you can, also monitor an application-level health endpoint.
| Field | API option | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostname, domain or IP | host | Required | Public hostname or IP address |
| Port | port | Required | 1 to 65535 |
| Check interval | interval | Your plan's minimum | From your plan's minimum up to 24 hours |
Common ports: SSH 22, SMTP 25 and 587, IMAPS 993, MySQL 3306, PostgreSQL 5432, Redis 6379, RDP 3389, Minecraft Java 25565.
Do not open a database or admin port to the whole internet only so that it can be monitored. If the port is meant to be private, keep it private and monitor the application that uses it instead. If you must allow FastPing through a firewall, allow only our address (see the troubleshooting guide on firewalls).
TCP port monitors only test TCP. Many game servers, DNS servers and VPNs use UDP, where there is no handshake to test. For supported games, the game server monitor sends a real query over UDP and reads the answer. For other UDP services, use a UDP monitor.
The free Port checker runs the same test once, from the same server.
