Game server shows offline but players can join
A checklist for game server monitors that report no response: query ports, firewalls, query settings, proxies and SRV records for Minecraft, Steam and FiveM.
- Test from our server. Run the address through the free Game server status tool. It uses the same query code from the same server as the monitor. If the tool fails too, work through the next steps; if it succeeds, compare its settings with the monitor's.
- Check the game setting. Java and Bedrock are different protocols on different ports, and every Steam game uses the "Steam / Source (A2S)" setting.
- Check the port. Steam games often answer queries on a separate query port: see the port table in Game server monitors.
- Check that the server answers queries. Minecraft Java servers only answer status requests when
enable-status=trueinserver.properties(the default). Valheim answers only when started with-public 1. Rust and DayZ answer on the query port configured in their start-up parameters or config file. - Check the firewall. Bedrock and Steam queries use UDP; Java and FiveM/RedM use TCP. A rule that only opens the game port for one protocol, or only for TCP, blocks the query. Game hosts' DDoS protection sometimes drops queries from addresses it does not know; ask your host to allow our server.
- Proxies. Behind a Minecraft proxy such as BungeeCord or Velocity, monitor the proxy's public address: it answers status requests for the network, so the player counts are the network's totals.
- SRV records. For Minecraft Java, leave the port empty to use the domain's
_minecraft._tcpSRV record, as the game does. If you enter a port, the SRV record is ignored.
As a fallback, monitor the host with a ping monitor or the game's TCP port with a TCP port monitor, and contact support with the server address, port and game so that we can test it.
